Liverpool gave a performance of their lives but it wasn’t to be on a night that Southampton were perfect with their game plan.
Liverpool were good in the first half and threw everything at Southampton but the defence pairing of Yoshida and Stephens were up to the task especially Stephens who deputised for the injured Virgil Van Dijk.
Even when the defence was broken with a well timed shot from Emre Can though Fraser Forster fumbled initially but his quick reflex helped made sure that the ball did not cross the line.
Southampton were solid in their defending all through the game and in the 92nd minute, Josh Sims broke away with the ball in his own half and with Liverpool players all seeking redemption were caught in the counter-attack. Sims found Shane Long who made sure Liverpool walked alone in the 93rd minute.
Southampton will play either Hull City or Manchester United who will play tonight for a place in the final at Wembley.
