Manchester United are the 2017 EFL Cup winners and this brings it to five in total for the red devils, also it is the fourth for their manager Jose Mourinho who had previously won it three times with Chelsea.
Manchester United did not particularly play well in this match but was able to grind out result from Southampton team that didn’t concede a goal on their way to Wembley.
Southampton started better and were playing with real intent and purpose. Their performances and effort were rewarded with a goal but the linesman wrongly flagged it offside. The replays showed Gabbiadini was clearly onside.
Manchester United won a free kick few minutes late and the veteran Ibrahimovic stepped up and scored a beauty from nearly 25 yards to give United the lead and soon after Jesse Lingard doubled United lead on what appeared to be like Southampton is with possession while United are with goals but just before the halftime whistle, Southampton scored a goal to show for their efforts. Three minutes after restart, Gabbiadini scored his second for the night to bring Southampton level with Manchester United. From then on, it was game on as both sides stepped up their games though Southampton team were still very much with most of the possession and could have scored more except for the bravery of De Gea and the post that saved United when Romeu rises above Pogba to head in the ball with De Gea clearly beaten but not the post.
Manchester United broke out with a counter through their talisman Ibrahimovic, he passed the ball to Martial on the left, who found Ander Herrare.
Herrare put in a perfect chipped cross into the six yard box for Ibrahimovic to end Southampton hope of winning the EFL trophy.
