Lionel Messi 29 and Cristiano Ronaldo 32 are two of the most talked about players in the world and no doubts, these two players lit up the football world with their amazing and superhuman performance and goal rush since their individual debut. Often times people view them as rivals but the truth is that they complement each other in so many ways.
I’ll begin by giving a brief history of these magnificent players that have kept every football fan glued to their seats every weekend with their out of this world skills.
Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese player who started his career with Andorinha at age just 7 before been scouted by Sporting Lisbon in 1997 and he made his senior debut aged just 16.
In the summer of 2003, Sir Alex Ferguson signed him for Manchester United and he didn’t disappoint as his blistering speed and dribbling skills mesmerized opposition defenders and fans were entertained.
In 2009/10 season, Real Madrid signed him for what was then a world record fee of £80 million and over 80 thousand fans was present for his unveiling at the Santiago Bernabeu.
He made his debut against Deportivo La Corona and scored in each of his first four matches for Real Madrid and he’s the first Madrid player ever to do so. Today he holds the record as Real Madrid all time leading goal scorer.
Lionel Messi, is an Argentina football player who began his career in his homeland with Newell’s Old Boys in 1994. At tender age, Messi was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency which caused them to relocate to Spain when he was just 13 years and Barcelona agreed to pay for his medical bills.
In 17 October 2004, he made his debut for Barcelona and his participation was limited due to injuries and in 2008/09 season, Lionel Messi blossomed and won the Ballon d’Or at age just 22 and FIFA Best Player Of The Year with a record margin, a feat he repeated the following year. In March 2012, Messi became Barcelona all time leading goal scorer in official competition and on Sunday 23rd April 2017, he scored his 500 Barcelona goals in their 2-3 win against their bitter rival Real Madrid.
Messi and Ronaldo are two inseparable individuals in the success stories of today’s football. Between them they have won nine Balling d’Ors and without doubts at the end of the season, it will increase to ten.
They are so good that every week, one tries to outdo the other. Whatever one can do, the other can do better and it was evident last week, when Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter finals to bring his tally to 100 goals and became the first player to reach 100 Champions League goals and four days later, Messi scored a brace against Real Madrid to bring his Barcelona goals to 500.
There is healthy competition between them which must be sustained. They are the best in the game and between they have over a thousand goals in a combined 28 years career. You can’t talk about Messi incredible left foot without mentioning Cristiano Ronaldo’s shots and goal proficiency.
